What Did President Obama Feed the College Football National Champions
President Barack Obama hosted the Alabama Crimson Tide national championship football team at the White House Wednesday to recognize the team and its accomplishments.
Obama was jovial in noting that Alabama has made a number of such visits during his presidency.
"This is the fourth time I have hosted Alabama here at the White House, so clearly I've brought you some good look," the president said. "In fact, you can call me 'O-Bama.'"
But Obama acknowledged where the real credit should go.
"Of course, a lot of recognition goes to somebody who is in the running to be the greatest college football coach of all time, coach Nick Saban," he said.
Obama said he met Crimson Tide Heisman Trophy-winning running back Derrick Henry at the National Prayer Breakfast earlier this year and was impressed not just by his size, but by his character.
"He led a gathering in a powerful and humble prayer," Obama said of Henry. "He prayed not just for the leaders in the room, but also, and I'm quoting him now, 'people who weren't able to eat breakfast that day, people who don't have clothes on their backs or shoes on their feet.' You can see Derrick's character in those words."
Obama said even the Crimson Tide's most bitter rivals must acknowledge Alabama's current run.
"I just want to say, coach, I couldn't be prouder of you and the work that you've done," Obama said. "I know the people of Alabama are extraordinarily proud of this team. Maybe the Auburn fans don't want to admit it, but everybody recognizes excellence when they see it and nobody's had more sustained excellence as a football program at the collegiate level than the Alabama Crimson Tide."
Obama said the team will have an opportunity to return to the White House next year, unlike himself.
"Congratulations and I'd like to say 'I'll see you next year,' but we've got this thing called term limits," he said. "You can keep on going."
Saban said the White House visits are remarkable moments for his football teams.
"This is really special for our team and all the people who made our team special," he said. "I'd also like to congratulate our team and thank our team for a wonderful job this year. They did some things that were special in their own way and I think the thing that was greatest about this team was they won as one."
With that, Saban noted that the leaders of the team wanted to present a jersey, helmet and football to Obama.
"Our captains would like to present you again …," Saban said. Obama interrupted "Again! I've got a lot of these jerseys."
